Young Women's Empowerment Day at Malvern!
This past Wednesday, grade 8 girls were invited by the Malvern 'Young Women Empowerment Group' (YWEG) to participate in a mostly student lead and organized conference. As part of this special day, students were able to choose which afternoon workshops they were most interested in, including: Healthy Eating & Active Living, Mental Illness, Healthy Relationships, High School Myths, and International Women's Issues.
Upon arrival at Malvern, students had time to mingle and enjoy a cinnamon bun, as they obtained their name tags and workshop information for the day. YWEG students began the conference with a discussion of 'feminism', which included important clarification that this word and identifying as a 'feminist', means that you believe in equal rights between men and women. They talked about how these words have been negatively misinterpreted, and also shared information on different branches of the feminist movement. (e.g., Liberal Feminism, African American Feminism) After the student lead conference in the morning, we were treated to healthy 'brown bag' lunches in the gym, that included a delicious sandwich, apple and juice box, before students split up to attended their different workshops in the afternoon.
After the workshops, we met again in the auditorium and were treated to two fantastic key-note speakers. The first speaker was Lia Grimanis, who holds a Guinness World Record for pulling a 17, 000 lbs tractor truck 100 ft. This inspirational woman spoke to us about being home, about the importance of overcoming 'Fear, Folly and Fatigue' in our lives. She is the founder of an charitable organization called, 'Up With Women', which provides leadership opportunities and support to homeless women and children. Lia taught us the important message that we can get our goals, when we approach things with different perspectives and from different angles. She also shared some of her own strategies for life, such as making a daily list of 'good things', and taking the time to celebrate the good things in our lives and to remember what is working. The second key-note speaker was Natty Valencia, a YouTube sensation, who made her own amazing parody remake of Meghan Trainor's, "All About That Bass", telling us instead that, "It's Not About Your Waist!" We enjoyed watching this video, that now has over 625, 000 views, and then were treated to a live performance of one of her other songs. Check out her video and this inspiration young woman! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVyJL8UM6mI
Words to live by! Thanks to all of the students and teachers at Malvern, and at Glen Ames, who made this amazing day possible! - Kingelin |
